Thing 16

I just finished Thing 16, Google Docs. I feel a little like a broken record.....I had no idea this was out there. There are so many templates available for so many different things. It is a little bit overwhelming. I am not sure this is something I would use very often. I'm not sure that I see the advantage to this over attaching a document to an e-mail. Maybe once I play around with it a little bit, I will see how it is a more efficient way to send documents.

  1. I'll share an example of a situation where it is advantageous to use a Google Doc over email. Last weekend I went to Hocking Hills, Ohio with a group of 36 people. We had a potluck dinner on Saturday night at the lodge where we stayed. I created a Google Doc spreadsheet with food categories with a defined number of rows per category that helped to organize the meal so that we didn't have 20 desserts. I emailed a link to the shared document and people signed up for a food category by typing directly into the document. Once someone typed in the document others could see it immediately (live, in fact, if more than one person was viewing at the same time). In contrast, at another event the previous year, the organizer of the potluck sent an email and asked people to "Reply to All" with their food contribution. So everytime someone made a change, everyone in the group got another email. As you can imagine, it was a mess because not everyone added to the most recent version of the email. I did this in the winter too with a larger group - works well!
